High School:
Ryan's love for the game of golf started at age 15 when his grandfather brought him to a "Hook a Kid on Golf" clinic while visiting Myrtle Beach. Ryan not only fell in love with the game but also realized he may just have a knack for it. From this point forward Ryan put in countless hours at Furnace Brook, Rockland GC, Presidents GC & Braintree Municipal to prepare for tryouts for his high school team at BC High. Ryan did not make the team the first two times he tried out (Soph & Junior year), but the third time was a charm. Ryan played on the BC High golf team his senior year and helped lead that team to an undefeated season, sectional win at Foxboro CC and an appearance in the Division 1 State Finals.
College:
Ryan then went on to be a four year starter for Division I Sacred Heart University's golf team. Ryan also served as a captain for 2 years. During his 4 year career he was named All New England 3 times and came from 10 strokes back to claim the 2002 Northeast Conference Individual Championship in a playoff against Mike Welch & Martin Pettigrew. His Senior year included top 5 finishes in the NEIGA, Yale, Army, Colgate, & the Northeast Conference tournament where he was trying to win back to back years & ultimately finished 2nd.
Amateur:
Ryan went on to make a name for himself around New England, winning his first major event in 2007 (Southeast Amateur). Over the course of the next 15 years he would win over 60 tournaments. Ryan considers his years competing in the AAGA as an incredibly influential time in his playing career. Competing against local stalwarts like Jim Renner, Marc Forbes & Chris Congdon battling over 4 days on 4 courses is a grind. 2011 was the pinnacle in his career as he captured his 3rd straight MA Fourball with Herbie Aikens, finished t2 in the Ouimet & Worcester County, finished t3 in the Mid Am & Publinx, won the Arch Invitational (Jack Nicolas), Dawson Invitational (Mike Calef), Worcester County Fourball (Herbie Aikens) , McCormack Shootout (Kevin Silva) & Norfolk County Fourball (Andrew Diramio). Ryan’s Mass Amateur victory 4 & 3 over Frank Vana Jr at Wyantenuck CC cemented his season and helped him in being named the Massachusetts Player of the Year. Ryan was able to make a name for himself not only at the local level but at the national level. Ryan qualified for a USGA event in 2013-2016. Finishing off his amateur career Ryan won the SouthCoast Fourball, Kittansett Fourball & his 7th Mass Golf Championship when he along with Plymouth CC’s Matt Montt shot 62-66 to win Matt’s first and Ryan’s 4th MA Fourball.
Coaching:
In 2005 Ryan decided to utilize his talents to teach others. He started off as an Assistant Golf Coach at King Philip High School, then moved on to be the Head Coach of Norton High School for 9 years, and then transitioned to his current home at Oliver Ames High School, where he is entering his 7th season. Coach Riley was named the Division 2 Boston Herald Coach of the Year in 2017 when he led the Oliver Ames Tigers to an undefeated regular season & State Sectional victory. With 190+ High School victories & 6 league championships, multiple MIAA South Sectionals, 2023 Hockomock League Championship, winning is something that is learned and taught. Ryan enjoys broadening his reach in helping others increase their love for the game.
